GEDCOM is an internationally agreed standard for family trees, which enables information to be shared from one tree to another.
A GEDCOM file is plain text (usually either UTF-8, ANSEL or ASCII) containing genealogical information about individuals, and metadata linking these records together. ‘.ged’ is a file extension used as a suffix to indicate the file has been formatted using the GEDCOM data specification
The main purpose of GEDCOM is that it allows you to share family tree between different family tree software or between different people provided both parties have used programmes using GEDCOM.
The latest GEDCOM version is 5.5.1 published in 1919.
GEDCOM Standards can be downloaded from the bottom of the GEDCOM Standards page.
